Virus-wary? Buy a Mac

Wall Street Journal "Personal Tech" columnist (and frequent Apple booster) Walt Mossberg tells his virus-wary readers in a new column to buy a Mac if they're serious about combatting the problem. Source: MacCentral I could not agree more. A thing to note here. Its not just Mac users saying "duh!" anymore, PC users are actually taking note as well. A number of my friends over the past few years have switched from their PC to a Mac, and they are really glad they made the switch.

Dave:

Does no one remember the late 80's/early 90's? When Apple had a decent share of the computer market? Do they not remember the viruses that would copy themselves to every floppy inserted into the computer because when a floppy was inserted an interrupt occurred in code so the virus was able to know when to copy itself without being detected?

I keep hearing people say: "Switch to a Mac and you won't see a virus again." Well guess what. If 50% or more switch to the Mac and the market share is more Mac than PC, the Mac will start getting viruses. Security holes in the OS will be found and exploited.

Sure Windows has problems. However, I can guarantee that Mac has them too, and they will be found if there is a substantial enough user base to make it worth virus writer's time.

The same is true for Linux as well.

Think about it. What is the point of a virus? To spread as fast as possible. How can a virus spread on only 5% of all the computers being used out there? Even 10%.

I almost wish a virus writer would just write one for the Mac just to show that it can still be done to quite these silly "Switch" statements.

Dave, this is a very good point and something I have discussed before. If the Mac users grow to a majority or even a substantial amount of the pie, people will be inclined to write viruses. but since Mac users are 3 to 5 % of that pie, we are not worth it. and frankly i am very happy of being 3 to 5 %, on many levels, not just concerning this one.

Dave:

I would be happy with a Mac as well if it weren't for the fact that I love playing games. There just isn't the selection of games on the Mac. Now, I know there is X-Box and other consoles, but I like playing on PC's since entering in cheats is much easier. (I like playing them the way I want to, not the developers. :)
