Mac OS Error Codes

I know nothing gets your blood pumping like error codes, but when you need to know, you need to know. I went googling today and found this great reference.

Its not as good as Bleu Rose's Black & Bleu, but it also does not cost $29.99. Which reminds me, I had a license for that app a while ago, I need to search for that!

I am also getting "Error code -36" when attempting to connect to a server using smb://. The information presented with the error message is:

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://hsg-cluster1" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).

I have never had problems connecting to SMB volumes, other then just not having the path correct. Why don't you ask that over at the Apple Discussion forum? Or how about the MacOSXHints forum? Or even the Macworld forum? Those are the 3 places I usually go if I am having OS X problems.

I get the exact same error code message trying to copy a disk image file to a FAT32 formatted external HD.

I'm am also getting the error code:

The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "smb://hsg-cluster1" could not be read or written. (Error code -36).

When trying to connect to a windows file share. I've used the same networking procedure regularly in the past without any problems, so I'm wondering if the situation may be caused by a recent Windows Update?

Adam Olson:

I am getting that same error message. I have my computer connected to a switch and Panther on my laptop and XP home work just fine but for what ever reason XP Pro neither of the computer will see it although XP pro shows that all the drives are set up on the network and shared. They all have full permissions and show the hand icon as though it is shared but doesn't work!

Mark Morency:

Easy fix for this issue. Use the Target computer's IP address instead of the name, for example:

Worked like a charm for me.

Mark: hey, that worked for me too! Many thanks, I'd been stuck with that for ages.

(OS X 10.3.9, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4)

Yank in Ulser:

Mark: Thanks from me, too. I wish Apple and other sites presented this simple answer so straight forwardly.

Shane Jenkins:

Hi, I am having problems with a script I have created for work. We have run it in the past and everything worked perfectly. Today when I went to run it as normal I found that it stoped and displayed a error message "Parameter Error." Any ideas to the usual nature of this error? If so please let me know.... It is very important that I get this script back on track before xmas.... If you have any Idea please email me : Many Thanks to all who will help.... Shane

Hi Folks,
am in real trouble!!
am trying to start my mac in os9 (yeah I know it's old)but before the os boots up it crashes and says error 10, restart and just keeps doing this, Any suggestions, or help on how to fix this would be really appreciated, it's urgent!!

Shane I assume this is an AppleScript, and "Parameter Error" is common when you mess something up! Beyond that I am going to be of no help to you.

And as for James and the OS 9 help: I stopped supporting OS 9 years ago. You cannot pay me enough (well, maybe you could) to support OS 9. There are simply a GREAT number of problems that could be causing your OS 9 system not to start, and give you an error 10.

For more detail you may try Bleu Rose, something I have blogged about before.

I have a problem with OS 10.2.8.
When i try and copy to an external hard drive it comes up with and error - 50. I'm new to the MAC and have no idea what the error means, can anyone tell me? Thanks so much.

Hi folks,

I need help...I have some audio files burned in to a DVD and I am trying to copy them into my G5... but I ge the Error code -36. The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "....." could no be read or written. (Error code -36).

Could any body help me out? Thank you

I have a Powerbook G4 with Panther and unfortunately without a superdrive. Luckily one of my friend has one so normally when I would like to burn an IDVD project I can copy the archived DVD porject to my Ipod and then I can burn it on my friends computer.

Never had any problem untill my last project (6.98 GB). When I copied it to the IPOD with 10 GB of space i got error code -36. I have changed the name into something short 'Michiel' instead of using 'The kitesessions Farwa, Libya 2004' because I read somewhere that long file names could cause error -36.

I do not have any other external device (HD) to determine if the Ipod is giving me errors but when I copy from one folder to another on the Powerbook there's no problems at all.

Has anyone any idea's how to solve this???

Many thanks for your help.

hi folks,
i reckon Intel MacBook with OSX 10.4.7 was written for all latest software only but not for the old ones even rosetta is doing the job behind.
all software get error message -10810 after a few mins and machine wouldn't restart or shut down.
will that be a memory problem?
please help.

I am trying to install Adobe Acrobat on a Mac OS X. I insert the disk and drag the file to the Applications folder.

However, error code-36 appears stating that the file cannot complete....could not be read or written.

Does anyone know how to fix this error so I can complete my installation???
