iPod Troubleshooting & Service

EDITORS NOTE: This was originally posted on November 24, 2003. It was updated with much more information and links on February 16, 2005. I want to welcome everyone who has been coming here from the search engines, and mainly Google (I have just been too busy to update this post). I cannot imagine any other reason for so many comments, so it must be because of the search engines.

UPDATE: 02/16/05: I have added one tip specific to Windows and USB/FireWire devices, as well as how to perform a hard reset of the iPod.

UPDATE: 02/22/05, Neil confirmed a few things, please see end of post.

What a great page, that is hard to find! There is also a iPod Service & Support page I just found. If you go to either of these pages and search for things, most, if not all, of your questions will be found.

I would also highly suggest the iPodLounge.com Forums or forums at Macworld, Mac OS X Hints, or Apple Discussions. The aboe Apple links and iPodLounge.com have great tutorials if you are unfamiliar with anything.

It seems most Windows user are having issues related to connecting/disconnecting the iPod. Windows XP has a new feature that tells you what external devices are connected, and you need to select the ones you wish to disconnect before you unplug them from USB or FireWire. As I recall, there is an icon in the Icon Tray for this. You need to disconnect the iPod from Windows before you unplug it from the computer. The analogy to this in OS X is to throw it in the trash or click the little eject button.

iTunes has an eject button next to the iPod. I am unfamiliar with iTunes for Windows, but I would *think* that clicking the eject button in iTunes would also eject the device from Windows. I am not sure on that one.

The other "holy grail" of fixes that seems to do the trick for 99% of Windows related iPod problems is performing a hard reset on the device:

Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears.

Any other problems you have? I would suggest one of the forums listed above. The Apple Discussions forums has a Connecting to Windows and iTunes for Windows sections you might find usefull.

Good luck on your quest. If I can part any advice, it would be this: use Google. After all, that is how you got here. Hopefully the links I have just added will help.

I can honestly say I have never heard of so many iPod related problems in my life. I have had 4 different iPods and never had so many problems. But that is why there are support forums. I get a lot of my questions answered at the forums listed above, hopefully you will as well.

Neil Turner said:

1. iPod Minis can certainly use USB 1.1 - I don't know about other iPods. It works in the same way as USB 2 but slower. Note that USB 2 *is* 'high-speed USB'.

2. If you don't have Firewire, consider either using your mains adaptor or getting a mains adaptor if you don't have one. It may fix some charging issues.

3. You can eject your iPod in iTunes for Windows in the same way as you can on the Mac, using the eject icon next to your iPod on the left-hand side.

4. With my iPod Mini, sometimes it appears to 'die' and you can't turn it on or do anything it. Plugging it into the mains using the mains adaptor is enough to get it running again.

I just bought a 20GB Ipod for windows. I'm using a firewire connection. When I plug in the ipod so that windows can format it I get a 'disk write error, or a 'firmware failure' message which haults formatting. is there anything I can do about this short of exchanging it for a new one???

I would go over to the Apple Discussions board to discuss this: Apple iPod Discussions.

Chelwa Fispo:

I just bought an iPod and can't install the software because I have Windows Me instead of 2000 or Xp. Is there anyway around upgrading my software?

no, i am pretty sure there is not. do yourself a big favor and backup your data, and do a clean install of Windows XP.

shahar:

i just bought a new Ipod and i would like to know if i have to buy usb 2.0 card or firewire card or can i use the regular usb card? because my computer doesn't recignize the ipod

i just bought a mini ipod and i plugged it into the usb port on my laptop and it doesn't work because my usb port isn't a high-speed port. my laptop doesn't have a firewire either. is there nething i can do to upgrade the usb to be high-speed or something like that?

That is a hardware issue. You need a USB 2 port or Firewire. There is no way, to my knowledge, to get an iPod to sync and charge over a USB 1.1 USB connection.

Arturo:

My 15 GB ipod blacked out and I cant bring it back to life, no matter my attempts to reset it.

It was not fully discharged when this happened. Now it wont recharge the batteries apparently.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Arturo

Well, time for my two sense. I have an Ipod, and I run it on Windows. If you have the 2nd Gen of the docking station, you can run it on a USB 1.0 connection. However, the most recent Gens only allow for USB 2.0 data transfer and charging.

On another note, Apple insists that the Ipod is USB compatable. However, it has been my experience that if you use a USB port (1.0 or 2.0) your Ipod will not hold a battery charge. If you use the firewire to PC connection, this resolves all problems with charging. However, if you have USB in the past, I would suggest contacting Apple to send in your Ipod for service because the battery will eventual not hold a charge.

I've had three batteries installed in my Ipod since purchasing it back in May. An Apple tech finally told me that the USB charge was damaging the battery. The Ipod works fine if I have it plugged into the Firewire port or my car charger. However, disconnecting it from a charger, even though the battery indicator is full, the Ipod just simply doesn't work. I can navigate through the menus, but as soon as I attempt to play a track, the Ipod restarts.

I expected more from Apple in terms of USB capabilities since all their periferals are connected using USB since the iMac days.

Don't get me wrong, I love Firewire, but on a PC, it can be hard to come by. Most PC's only have one Firewire port, so I always end up having to by a PCI card of Firewire ports....funny thing is it's near impossible to find just a Firewire port anymore, so I have three firewire ports and 12 USB ports....

Marvin Ward:

I have a 30GB iPod, that has worked without a hitch for about 8 months now. Today when I was listening to it, it was playing fine. Then it started skipping ahead one song at a time, not playing any of them. I reset it, and now all I get is the apple coming on followed my a folder and caution sign graphic. The graphic shows for two seconds and then the iPod shuts off. Have you ever heard of this? What can I do short of sending it in for service (excluding restore)?

geeman:

i got an error message displayed on my ipod as please do not disconnect. it has been on for a an hour now. what can i do.

mike:

help I have a 20 gb i pod running on a windows xp with a fire wire now when i load to now when i put the ipod in the docking station my computer cant see it any ideas what is wrong ???

nikki:

I have a 40GB iPod and it had been working perfectly fine, until one day it froze up, and so I charged it full and tried to reset it, but it won't. And I've noticed that occasionally the menu button will work, but that's all. Any ideas?

Sabrina:

I just bought an ipod mini and it won't let me add my songs to the ipod from iTunes! I keeping getting this error message:

"The iPod "Sassy's Tunes" cannot be updated because one or more of the iTunes playlists selected to update no longer exist."

I don't know how to fix this, any ideas? I deleted a playlist, but right now my ipod is empty so I can't figure out why it thinks a playlist is missing.

Thanks!
Sabrina

I would really like to know why people keep asking me questions about their iPod problems.

I have 2 iPods and have never had problems.

As in my first comment to this post, I would go to the Apple Discussion Forums for the iPod. That or iPodLounge.com, or my favorite Mac forum MacOSXHints.com.

Sabrina - if you have nothing on the iPod now anyways, have you reset it? Then drag a playlist to it. If that doesn't work I would delete the playlist in iTunes, create a new one, put all the songs you want back in the new playlist, and then drag it to the iPod.

*nocks on wood* I have never had an issue with my iPods. So I am no expert on how to fix them.

Jane Craig:

Help! My stepson has an iPod and an account on iTunes. I have figured out how to convert some of his existing music library (other internet downloads and CD's) to the format that the iPod recognizes, and they transferred over just fine. However, his "regular" iTunes downloads have stopped being able to be transferred to his iPod. Any tips on how a novice can figure out why this isn't working any more? Thanks!!!!

Louise:

Hi
I am just about to purchase a 20gb ipod and my pc is two and a half yrs old and apple can't guarentee that it will work. I have windows xp and the guy in the store said that I needed to puchase a new computer or upgrade ?? what gives?

thanks
lou

lou - a new computer? i cannot imagine why. For an iPod to work I am pretty sure you need USB 2 or Firewire. But I believe that Neil got his iPod mini working with USB 1.1, although it was very slow. I would say if you have USB 2 you would be fine. Since you have XP I do not see that being an issue either.

I would say you ran into a bad salesman. For starters, he should be selling the product, not turning people away. And secondly, it doesn't sound to me like the person has a clue. Was this in an Apple Store? I would go up to the Genius Bar and talk to someone there, or even the Genius himself. There has got to be someone there who is not nieve to Windows.

I do not see how your 2.5 yr. old PC would have a problem. If you do not have USB 2 or Firewire, I would suggest picking up a PCI card, both USB or Firewire PCI cards are not that expensive.

lou - you could also talk to someone at HP. They are, I am sure, more then eager to sell you an iPod. and its the same darn thing. Those salespeople would be better equipped to give you advice it seems then the person who told you you needed a new PC.

Then again he could have been referring to upgrading to USB 2 or Firewire.

JP:

I just recently purchased 20 gig ipod+hp, I had loaded a couple gig worth of tunes before upgrading to Windows XP Pro. When I loaded ituens and puluged in my Ipod it asked if I wanted to use the new library or keep the one I had. I told it to use the new one. As expected it deleted my old playlist and loaded the new one which only had a few new songs. When I look at "settings - aout " it only shows I have 18.5 gig of space. How do I get it formated back to 20 gig?

JP: you will not get a full 20 GB of storage space on your 20 GB iPod. In OS X there is a firmware update utility that you can use to format the iPod. You might try doing that, I do not know how you do that in Windows XP.

SHIZZDADDY:

I saw that someone is looking for a way to use your i pod with Windows ME. Well I had the same problem until I upgraded to XP but all you have to do is search in google for EPHPOD and download the software. It will tell you that you need to download a MAC Driver also...just follow the links to download this.

I also am having a problem with my 20gig +Hp iPod. Every time I try to update it a get a message saying "iPod Service Error" and ITunes keeps telling me that the software to connect the iPod is not working and needs to be reinstalled only when I do reinstall it, it is still the same error.

Any Ideas???????????

SHIZZDADDY - I have no idea why. But thanks for the info on EPHPOD. I would try the Apple Discussions board, I liked to them further up (2nd comment).

Scopa:

i have a problem my ipod 20GB came up with a folder and exclamtion mark next to it and also a few seconds later the apple logo appears and i cant seem to reset or charge it

Eric:

I have a very strange problem. I got my 40gig, 4G iPod a few weeks ago and I've never had any problems, but today, when I plugged it into the USB port of my computer and it didn't recognize.

There is no "Do Not Disconnect" and it doesn't show up in iTunes, nor does it show up in My Computer. It does say that it is charging up, however. My efforts to fix this problem have consisted of restarting the iPod and updating the iTunes software, but so far nothing has worked. What makes this odd is that it ceased to recognize the iPod suddenly and for no apparent reason. Any help with this problem would make me very, very thankful.

For the 4G iPods, hold the menu and center buttons simultaniously until the apple logo appears, the iPod should be reset and will now connect!

Dan:

Need some help here please. Installed itunes on my company laptop because my pc had Windows Me. Company made me get rid of itunes and now I have over 800 songs on my mini that I want to import to the pc (which I've since upgraded to XP-rot in hell Me!). In a nutshell, how do I import songs from the mini to itunes?

Manny:

I've had my 10GB ipod for almost a year. Nothing has gone wrong with it until now. When i plug it into my computer, nothing happens. the ipod charges, but it doesn't say "do not disconnect" like it normally does, nor does windows xp make any acknowledgement of it's existence. i think this started happening right after i used a friends cable, dock, and wall charger to charge it on a trip. what's wrong with my ipod??

Steph:

Hey,
I bought an iPod mini very recently, hoping that if it was compatible with windows 2000 it would be with Windows Me... but i was wrong. I am getting a laptop this February for school purposes (it will have XP) but I want to be able to temporarily use my iPod. I also need to reload the software.

Karljb4:

I have a 15Gb 4th gen, that worked absolutly fine until one week ago, now my updater reads 'ipod service error' and when I connect to itunes it says the the 'hardware has malfunctioned.'It does recongised it as an external hard drive. Also I reformatted the Ipod, lost all my music.......Has this happened to anyone else?

Tasha:

Help! I just purchased a 20GB iPod and it works fine, however, after my songs are uploaded from iTunes to the iPod, I can't access the songs through iTunes (for ex. to place in folders, etc.) The songs show up under my iPod name, but they are all grayed out and I can't click on them. Any thoughts?
THANKS!!

just got my ipod 40gb(software version 3.0.2) two days ago..but it not detected on my PC(dell 8200 p4 1.8 mhz, xinXP sp1) i got both firewire n usb2(just bought it),both didn't work ..but amazingly it work on build in usb 1.1(ipod detected but very slow),anything i can do to use my usb 2/fireiwire? isn't it because is not "HIGH POWER" usb 2/or hav 2 connect usb2 to the power supply ?! anyone can help or any ideas?!

Stephen:

Just got 20G iPod for Christmas. Everything works great except one thing: when I try to import one song or all the songs on a CD album using iTunes, the songs are clicking and popping noises. Tried all encoders on iTunes (AAC, MP3, etc.) and also did what the manual said to do (check the box that says use CD error protection) and still get no music and just clicking. So I basically have to take one more step and use a different CD ripping program and add the files to the library that way, it's one extra step but I'd rather just import using iTunes. Any help or suggestions??? THANKS!!

Karinmaya:

I have been using my iPod for almost a year without any problem ... until today, when I connected my iPod and nothing happened -- other than starting to charge. I run Windows XP on a Dell computer and connect the iPod via firewire, which worked beautifully until today. I just read Dan's post of November 21 and realized I may have the same problem he had. Dan, if you read this, please let me know how you resolved the problem (I hope you have fixed the probelm since November 21st!). I was on a two-week trip overseas and used a Belkin Back-Up Battery Pack for iPod (Model No. F8E464) while overseas. That's the only thing that's "happened" to my iPod since I last connected it to the PC (I uploaded a few more CDs the day of my departure!). If any of you have encountered the same problem or know how to fix it, please help!

chris higgins:

just got a 20gb ipod for christmas and for the first couple of days i could fast forward some very long song files that contain more than one song, now all of a sudden it will not let me fast forward, has any-one else had this problem and if so how did they correct it

David:

Looks like I am not alone. Anyone come up with a fix for the "When i plug it into my computer, nothing happens. The ipod charges, but it doesn't say "do not disconnect" like it normally does, nor does windows xp make any acknowledgement of it's existence." problem yet? It is most annoying. I was considering resetting the iPod, but that would risk never being able to connect to it again - and having no music on it :-(

Help!

boo:

formatting... my ipod mini has been formatting for close to 3 days and nothing has happened.

is it supposed to take this long!? can someone.. help me? understand what's wrong with this... stupid... thing?

Lora:

Help! I just got an ipod, downloaded the songs, no problem, but they won't play. Instead when I select a song, it just scrolls through all the songs and then stops. No music! What gives?

When I first plugged my ipod into usb 1.0 it picked up the ipod straight away. Can anyone help me

If Windows won't recognize your ipod when you insert it, try holding the menu and center buttons together for a few seconds to reboot the ipod. when it comes back up, insert it again, and windows should recognize it. worked for me!

I bought an ipod 40gb and it runs great, but about one month ago I have a problem in my computer and I needed to reinstall all the software again.
The problem is that now I cannot get identified the ipod in the computer.
Perhaps I am doing something wrong, but I don't know exactly what to do! Can anyone help me? thanks.

chuck:

Just bought my first 20gb iPod
after installing the S/W, I connect the iPod, and get asked to format my ipod for my PC. after selecting this option the unit starts flashing "do not disconnect" and stays that way forever. It is connected to a USB2.0 using Pentium 4 with XP. It seems like it wants to reformat the iPod, but nothing ever happens. I have tried re starting my PC numerous times and still get the "do not disconnect" continuously.

HELP !! I want music !!!

Chuck - when the iPod is connected to your computer, it will continually flash "Do not Disconnect." until you unmount it. Therefor I do not fully understand your question.

Did you try opening iTunes and seeing if iTunes recognizes the iPod? If it does start dragging songs/playlists to it.

If your computer does not recognize your iPod, then I would do a hard reset on the iPod:

Press and hold the Play/Pause and Menu buttons until the Apple/iPod logo appears.

To confirm:

1. iPod Minis can certainly use USB 1.1 - I don't know about other iPods.

GKJ:

Hi All,

Unlike all you above I am kind of a novice to these things. I have a brand new Ipod. I have already downloaded 4 GB of music into my Toshiba laptop.Whenever I connect my ipod to my computer all I get is restore the updater and when I try to I get firmware falure/ disk write error. Did i mention I have a brand NEW LAPTOP, and I have already spent 4 hours with tech support @ Apple and Toshiba. Please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nnenna:

I just want to say thanks for the postings of the 4G Reset trick (holding down menu and centre buttons simultaneously until Apple logo appears). My computer had refused to detect my Ipod and I was becoming convinced it had developed a fault! Was ver close to sending it back to Apple. Thanks for saving me unnecessary hassle!!

Jake:

I just got a 20 gb Ipod and I am having trouble with my USB port. When I plug the Ipod in my Dell Laptop it comes up with a message that says I don't have any high speed USB connections on my computer. What are my possible solutions? I've heard that I could get a USB 2.0 card, but I don't see where I could even install it into my laptop. Would using a hub connected to the USB port on my computer work? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You can get a USB 2 PCMCIA card for your laptop. A USB 2 hub still has to go through USB 1.1 to your laptop. I thought Neil (http://www.neilturner.me.uk/) was successful at getting his iPod mini working on a USB 1.1 connection.

But my ultimate suggestion, like everyone else who has posed their question here, is to head over to the Apple Discussions forums at apple.com.

Frankly I am glad I do not have a PC with an iPod, because it sounds to me like there is no one out there in the Windows world who can use an iPod without problems. I know that cannot be true, but it sure doesn't sound that way from the small amount of people who have posted their question here.

Dave Oberg:

My 30GB iPod Photo stopped playing midtune and froze. The screen is lit, but it does not respond to any control input, including the reset (pressing the Menu and Select buttons simultaneously). When I plug it into my computer, the computer does not recognize it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Stefani:

Help! The computer had my iPod Photo reformatted and a battery with an exclamation point is flashing on screen ever since. Tried charging the thing but it's no use! Even the Menu/Enter troubleshoot won't work. Please help!!!!!!

I have a 40GB picture iPod. it worked for a while then started skipping, then it didnt play any of the songs. now all I get is the apple coming on followed my a folder and caution sign graphic. i had it sent in and they replaced the hard drive, but it happened again, so i sent it in again, and it happened again. is there anything that i can do?

David Jeavons:

I plug in my iPod and for some reason my PC won't recognise it. It merrily says "do not connect" but it doesn't pop up on ITunes. Is there anybody out there who can solve my problem?
Thanks!

ryan:

OK, after several hours of driving myself crazy, I figured out how to get the ipod mini working. Since the new minis require usb 2.0 "high power" and my noteboook only has usb 1.1, I went to best buy and bought a 2 port usb 2.0 pcmcia card for about 30 bucks. But, of course, this still wouldn't fix the problem. So there is a little power cord that pugs into the usb 2.0 card and connects to an adapter to add a little power. Plug the adapter part into the usb connector from the ipod mini cord and then plug the adapter into usb 1.1 port on the laptop. That doesn't seem like it would do anything, but that's the only way it recognizes the ipod on the laptop. (Windows xp). What a pain, and still slow, but at least i now have 2 usb 2.0s for everything else I own that never seems to work.

Ash:

Help! I bought an ipod on ebay and have had it for about 3 months now. It's worked fine until yesterday when the screen tells me that the hold button is on when it infact isn't. I've tried toggling it on and off but to no avail and holding play and menu does not seem to work. Please help.

Karen:

Hello,

I have a 40G generation 4 iPod. It has worked fine, but recently the menu button has become completely unresponsive. The current album will play, I can move back and forth between songs, turn up the volume, etc. but can not get back to the any menu options as the button will not work. HELP PLEASE!

I am sorry to hear about your bizarre problem. But I can only assume you did not read the very beginning of my post. Please follow the links to the MESSAGE BOARDS and post your question there.

You might also call Apple. They have a support number for that reason. How old is it? Did you buy AppleCare for it? Even if you did not, it mist be under manufacturers warranty. Apple, in my personal experiences, has been very helpful through phone support.

Do you have an Apple store nearby that you could go or schedule some time with the Genius Bar?

Good luck.

Not that I know anything about I-pods, but does the button actually depress? Is it stuck? If that's the case, assuming it's like buttons on any other electronic, just loosening the screws holding it together should pop it up. The rubber pads sometimes fail to act like a spring as they should and no contact is made.

joe:

Heyy, i have a mini ipod and like just recently whenever i would hook it up to my computer to get songs onto it, the ipod would turn on but it wouldn't say "do not disconnect" with the no smoking sign like it usually does when u hook it up. Also, my computer isn't recognizing the ipod being hooked up because it ususally starts up itunes right away and it has the little icon for safely removing the hardware on the bottom right corner of the screen and now its not doing that at all...wat should i do?

James:

I accidently downloaded some songs from a computer without using the itunes on to my 20GB ipod, I believe the computer was using windows media player. It showed the plus sign and it looked like it downloaded the songs like it would using itunes. Afte I disconnected the ipod it showed no songs at all and the avaliable memory was 14.1GB reasonable seeing that I just downloaded some things. But it still shows 0 songs but 14.1GB capacity left even after I manually reset it a couple of times. Could you help me with this problem?

It sounds to me like you copied some music to the DATA part of the iPod. This will not show up in iTunes or be selectable on the iPod. Take a look in the Finder or in My Computer and look at the files on your iPod's hard drive. I'd bet they are there.

Mel:

Hi...I have a 40GB Ipod and it works fineon Windows XP when connected via firewire. I have USB 2.0 but when I connect via USB, Windows displays a msg that reads 'USB device unrecognised'. Also if I connect thorough the USB hub, it says USB power exceeded. Any suggestions?

Do you really want me to answer this? Why not just use Firewire, if it works. As for your USB hub, it is either not a powered hub, your iPod will not work through the USB. The iPod (when used with USB 2) has to both charge your iPod and power the iPod so you can use it with your computer. Firewire doesn't have this issue because it has a much bigger pipe. I also wonder if your USB hub is USB 2 or not. Now I will tell you exactly what I told everyone else: Do you see those links, at the very top of this post, there are a bunch of links to forums. Try those.

Linda:

Is there another way of getting the USB to detect the IPOD mini aside from resetting it? It's a pain extracting those songs off my CDs again (I deleted them from the HD afterward to free up space). sadness!

Well, first there is freeware and shareware that can extract songs from your iPod to your HD. But you do not have to erase your iPod to get your computer to recognize your iPod, AFAIK. Just reset it (this does not mean format the iPod.)

Old iPod: hold Menu & Play/Pause buttons
Click Wheel iPod: hold Menu & Select buttons

The iPod will power off and restart. Your computer should now see your iPod as a USB device,

Julia:

When I plug my 4g ipod into my mac, it continually flashes "Do Not Disconnect" on the ipod screen. The hard drive makes lots of funny noises, and the computer does not recognize my ipod. I have already done the hard reset, but the same thing happens the next time I plug the ipod into my computer. I have no clue why this is happening. I have successfully downloaded music to my ipod many times in the past. PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!

You might try going to a forum Julia. I linked to a bunch of them at the beginning of this article. What a concept! If I sound like a smart ass here its because you are not the 50th person to ask and the 50th one to NOT READ MY POST about checking out some GOOD RESOURCES (the forums and web pages linked above) the first time around.

But really, I am not an ass. I would say initialize the iPod with the latest iPod Software Updater (you will loose all songs and data on your iPod, and plug it into your Mac again. Beyond that I suggest the forums. Also if you have AppleCare for your iPod, you could call Apple.

Zlatan Hodzic:

I have had my 20 GB ipod for about a year now. It worked fine when I just got it but about a month ago when I tried adding new songs the computer wouldnt recognize it. I did switch computers during this time but installed everything on the new one. The one I hav enow is older and does not have a USB port so I used a cable where you plug it into the mouse or keyboard jack and then hook it up to the ipod. It didnt recognize that so I tried on my dads computer and again it didnt recognize it. He has a dell dj and it works fine so I doubt it is the computer. Lastly, I gave it to a friend and he said his computer didnt recognize it. The ipod recharges fine, and plays songs that are on it fine. I have no idea about what to do. Thanks in advance.

The obvious question, that no one seems to try first: Did you reset the iPod? Next step, all with me now, go to the message boards.

The Meg-chan:

If you hold the menu & middle buttons together to reboot the ipod, will this complete reset it and delete all your songs? I don't think so, but I'm just checking cause I don't want to screw myself over. I'd rather have the same songs than no songs.

Holding the menu & middle buttons together will reset the iPod, it DOES NOT format the iPod, it resets it. Go to the link in the article and you can read about resetting your iPod.

You use the iPod Updater to format the iPod's HD.

CHADWICK:

MY IPOD IS HAVING ISSUES WHEN IT IS PLAYING SONGS IT NO LONGER SHOWS THE TILE ARTIST PLAYBACK VOLUME THERE IS JUST A SQUARE HOLLOW BOX ON THE SCREEN. IS THIS A SETTING ISSUE OR IS THERE SOMETHING BROKEN OR WHAT

STOP SCREAMING FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! OK, now, did you reset the iPod? Go to an Apple Store and talk to someone at the Genius Bar, or go to an iPod forum with your issue like has been suggested over and over and over and over and over again.

You have an interesting problem, I'll give you that. I have never heard of that before. There is a first for everything.

byron:

i just bought a brand new ipod to complement my fairly new toshiba laptop. however, when i plug my ipod in, it makes the computer hang until i disconnect the ipod. this is very disappointing, im almost about to cry. can someone PLEASE help me with this??

Byron - try the Playlist Mag forums (http://playlistmag.com/forums/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php) or the iPodLounge forums (http://forums.ilounge.com/). They would be very happy to help troubleshoot your problem. I do not use an iPod with a PC.

alyssa:

i've had this 20gb click wheel ipod for maybe 5 months now and it's my second one. and it works perfectly some days. but last night, i was in the middle of listening to a song when all of a sudden it freezes and so i reset it until the apple logo shows up then i see a folder icon with an exclamation mark. the computer doesn't recognize it and it doesn't charge. it also goes to the diagnostic mode and i don't know what to do! please help me. I'M DESPERATE.

A lot of times I wonder why I comment to this entry. Because I really don't think anyone reads my comments. So this is the last one. See my comment above about the Playlist forum and the iPodLounge forum, and just for the hell of it, read the bleeping entry (it has this blue text, if you click on it, you will go to a site that WILL HELP YOU WITH YOUR PROBLEM.)

Have a nice day!

bob dunn:

Has anyone had this problem? My IPOD (3rd gen I think, 40 g) shows the logo when I try to turn it on, and then shuts off. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Linda Miler:

I am grateful to everyone here who has posted your problems and your solutions. My husband bought me a 4 GB iPod mini today to listen to my meditation programs. For at least 5 hours I tried to get my computer - a Dell laptop Inspiron 8600 - to recognize the iPod, to no avail... until I came here.

Then I reset the iPod by holding the menu and middle button until the apple logo appeared. I downloaded updates for the iPod and iTunes and then I went back formated (restored) the iPod - and that was when it kicked and actually transferred what I had imported into iTunes.

Thank you all!

Linda Miller

Congratulations Linda, I am really happy to hear that!

Corey:

I solved the "iPod Service Error" problem by (1) removing iTunes 5.0.1 from my machine, (2) deleting the contents of the directory c:\program files\ipod\bin, (3) installing the *old* iTunes software that came with my iPod.

john:

Hi I have a question. I admit that I have downloaded music in the past. When i play music in my itunes player, the music randmonly pauses in the song. Its a short sudden pause. Can you somehow explain this to me. Thanks

Zedex:

To those having problems with the menu button not working: this happened to me too. The button still worked to switch the backlight on and off (by pressing and holding down) so I knew it was still working, but it wouldn't work to take me back to the main menu so I was stuck on the same album. To resolve this, flick the hold button to locked then unlocked. Now press and hold the Menu button and the Select button (central button) for several seconds until ipod switches off and apple sign appears. This should work - it did for me (mini ipod).

i have a 4th gen. 20g ipod. its been working fine for a while. i recently tried connecting it to my laptop (which has a blocked usb port). ever since i tried that, the computer won't recognize my ipod (it dosen't say do not disconnect)i can charge my ipod, but i can't add music to it.

Ash:

Wazza:

I had ‘the same problem as everyone else’ - my PC wouldn’t recognise my iPod. Do not disconnect was displayed, and a whole bunch of buzzing, whirring, and clicking sounds on my iPod. Contrary to most advice, I could not restore my iPod because my PC wouldn’t recognise it. I tried everything that Apple provided for my problem on their support site, except for sending it back (I am about 4 weeks out of warranty and have been trying to fix this for about 2 weeks).

A couple of postings on Apple Discussion forums will help you. Please try everything that Apple’s support sites suggest, but what they won’t tell you is that while holding it vertically and giving the iPod a good whack to the bottom on a surface such as a thick paperback, almost hard enough to break a glass, may get things back in order. It seems like the clicking sounds made by the iPod suggest some sort of harddisk misalignment. You may do more damage, so be warned, it worked for me but was an absolute last resort. Try this one for your reference:

I am (not really) glad to hear that it was a Windows update issue. Congrats on finding it - and taking it on the chin by spending hours on the phone with MS.

I just got a 60Gb version 5 and was working well until today when I got the do not disconnect sign continuously but it was not recognised by itunes to update and shutting down the computer did not stop it. Reading on the help sites told me to reset but it would not respond to the reset routine of hold on, hold off and press play & menu. I eventually got the unit back up by charging from the mains and pressing menu and the centre button thanks to the info on this site.

kAINE:

I've had this 20GB 4G iPod for a couple months now without problems until this morning: I tried uploading 7 songs into my iPod and while all messages appear to be normal ("iPod Update is Complete", menu appears to have uploaded songs) the songs themselves are not playing! The screen just stays at the album folder without any progression... Every other song I've uploaded prior (including the album I had uploaded last night) seems to be working just fine, except for the 8 songs I tried to upload. I don't see what I'm doing wrong, I've uploaded hundreds of cds before, why is this a problem now? Please help thx

CAPTAIN OBVIOUS!:

Your all idiots plain and simple. Mot of you who say your iPod is bugged and broken realise this: MOST OF THE TIME YOUR STILL UNDER THE ORGINAL ONE YEAR WARRANTY. What does this mean? Well to any idiot you have 2 choices, one if you dont have an iPod store around you. You can A) either return the peice of crap to them and they will either repair or replace the iPod with an either efurbished one or a brand new one. or B) Send it into Apple (takes longer but gets the job done anyhow) and they will either repair or replace it free of charge your still under the warranty anyway.

To people having software problems saying that their iPods cant be found, most of the time its a USB mouse or keyboard that interfers take that out and replace it with the old fashioned one (This happened with my PSP) if thats not the problem do this: CALL TECH SUPPORT 9 times out of 10 they will solve the problem unless your an asshole with its head stuck up just that, your asshole who dosent folloy directions correctly. Whats a few bucks? You alrdy spent over 300 on the most fragile/cheap mp3 player around and for what? so you can listen to BONO music on the subway while your going to save the animals? you people suck at life so stop trying send your ipods to me and ill do them right...bitches

I couldn't have said it better myself. Reminds me of the Mr. Obvious show on Bob and Tom.

Hi, just wonderign if you can help, have had my ipod mini for about 18 months and i accidently dropped it down the stairs at the weekend, now when i play it it sounds like it's being played underwater. I've tried re-setting it but that doesn't help. It plays fine through the computer. Is there anything i can do to save it?

Meg:

My click wheel does not work. I can play/pause and rewind/forward but I cannot adjust the volume or select other playlists or scroll through the menus.

I googled my problem, I went on Apple's troubleshooting page and finally skimmed through several ipod forums. Please don't call me an idiot, I really can't seem to find the solution anywhere. Any ideas before I ship it off and pay 300 bucks to get it repaired?

Btw, I bought it second hand a couple of months ago (gen 4), maybe that wasn't such a good idea.

Jessica:

My mini i pod used to work fine but just recently when i plug it in a little screen comes up saying that the USB hub does not have enough power available to operate the USB mass storage device. Why is this happening when it used to work fine and how can i fix it?

Jessica - The iPod needs a lot of juice. And the USB port doesn't do a great job. If you have the iPod plugged into a hub, take out ALL OTHER devices.

Or buy a USB hub that uses an AC adapter.

Hi Meg, I won't call you an idiot! You did some homework first! For that I thank you.

Did you post at iPodLounge (Now iLounge) or MacOSXHints?

Have you totally format your iPod. You can do this with the iPod Update application. This wipes everything on the drive and updates it to the latest version. Be sure to have the latest version iPod software before you do this.

Did you also reset it? I assume you have done that already too.

I would try MacOSXHints.com, if you have not.

Good Luck!

Hello! I have a brand new 60GB 4th gen ipod (a replacement for one that stopped working). It has now turned evil on me however.. Yesterday I turned it on and all of my playlists and music were gone... so i thought that maybe by accident i had reset it - but no. My photos were still there. The most perculiar part is that the memory still appears used up, even after I did a re-format.

Songs 0
Photos 0
Capacity 55.7 GB
Available 2.1 GB

Any ideas? Thanks!

Chris:

I recently bought 2GB Ipod nano, masterpiece, however I have spent over 6+ hours trying to figure out why it doesnt want to sync with many playlists in I-tunes (there were general problems as well like device disappearing from system/explorer). Haha finally read here new Gens are compatibile with USB 2.0 only !!!

The question is: Why these noobs from Apple do not inform us users about such things?

Ipod manual states: 'Connect to USB port in ur computer. USB 2.0 is recommended' Of course I was aware old USB port will be much slower but where the hell is it written it will not work at all???

Good luck all Ipod users, have fun ;P
[I need to buy a PCI USB card in this case - I still love that thing ;)]

I got a Nano for Christmas, and i was having a problem idk what caused it, but when i went to go to songs it would just keep scrolling, but if you hold menu and the circle in the middle, it worked for me

I have a 20GB IPod, WinXP, and bought a USB 2.0 card. The IPod appears on My Computer but doesn't appear on the ITunes src list, and the software updater doesn't detect the IPod either. The IPod works on other computers. Is there something I'm missing here?

Han Wuyts:

I just bought a 3rd gen 10 gb iPod, and iTunes won't sync it (the songs already on them are from the previous owner and they're shitty). Maybe I'm using the wrong cable? But it's the same one I use to plug in the American recharger, and it has a Firewire logo on it, so I guess I could use it. What will I do? Plz help me

Hey, I just got a mini ipod a few weeks ago, but now whenever I select a song, it just scrolls through all the songs in that file, then goes to Music. I tried playing Music Quiz on Games, but no music plays, and apple doesn't have a site for ipod mini's anymore.
Any ideas on how to fix it?

Anar:

Hi there!
I just got my iPod and troubles started as soon as i started working with it. I installed iTunes and iPod software as needed and as soon as I connected iPod to my computer, it started transferring all the music I had on my computer to the iPod. I tried to cancel it though I didn't find any button for this. The "do not disconnect" message kept on appearing on the device since i plugged it to the computer... I found a crossed button next to music transfer indicator (on the top middle part of the iTunes window) and clicked it assuming that this might cancel the music transfer process. Indeed, it did stop, though, it was obvious that that was not a very correct way to stop the transfer. I kept on waiting till the message appeared stating that the iPod has been updated successfully. "Do not disconnect" message didn't dissapear and moreover, after I figured out this eject button and try to eject the iPod, i didn't work! I waited almost one hour more hoping naively that the process will end up normally but it was obvious that there was something wrong and the device got jammed. Everytime i tried to eject the iPod, it gave the message - "iPod cannot be ejected because it is used by another application". I tried to safely remove it from the taskbar as it's done with the USB memory stick. I didn't work either, it got completely jammed giving me the message - "cannot stop the device, try it again later"! Well, I decided to restart my computer and as i did that, a very quick message stating something about the failure blinked on the monitor before the computer shut down. After it restarted, the iPod started functioning absolutely normally - i could transfer music to the device and eject normally. All i wonder about is that whether my iPod got damaged anyhow by this jam that hapenned (supposely because of a incorrect transfer stop) or it was just a regular inconvenience that happens so often to computers without any negative consequences.
Thank you all, who read this message till the end (it's definitely not a short one) and I'll be really thankfull if you help me out with any advice or explanation.

Thanks once again,
Ciao ciao

I have a bit of a problem. I have a 4th gen 40gb Ipod. It all started with me playing a song on my ipod to find that part of it had gotten messed up. I deleted it, and put it back on..later I found out that a couple more songs got messed up, and some weren't even playing when I selected them. I restarted it (pressed menu & select), and to my dismay, all my songs (about 1600) were gone. So I tried restarting it again. The songs were permanently gone. Later on I put about 500 or so songs on it, and it was working fine. Until, it wouldn't play some of the songs I selected. I restarted again, and again, all the songs were gone. Then I got a folder with an exclamation point, and I played around with it, and it disappeared. I restored it, but the folder returned. Now, when I press something, I get the apple logo, followed by the folder with an exclamation point, and then it just turns on. My computer, itunes, and Ipod updater won't recognize it. When I try to update it, I get a message saying "The iPod Updater 2006-03-23 cannot continue because there are other applications using iPod. Please close all iPod applications and try again." I have absolutely no idea about what to do, also, my warranty has expired so, PLEASE help.
