Another film anomoly: A Scanner Darkly

Also just learned of an impending film version of Philip K Dick's "A Scanner Darkly." Not my favorite of his stories but the diaspora of talent (it may be that I use the term loosely) working on it may make for an interesting combination.

To sum up the book, briefly, it is about an undercover narc who winds up getting far too under the covers, to the extent that he's no longer sure of who he really is, who's watching whom, and so on. Based on Dick's drug experiences, the sci-fi angle comes into play with a "Big Brother watching" motif and basically cops being given far too much power.

Richard Linklater (Waking Life, Before Sunrise/Sunset, School of Rock and inexplicably, Bad News Bears) directs, though Charlie Kaufman and Terry Gilliam were initially involved as early as 1990. Linklater is obviously capable of good/weird movies but seems to have just been doing kiddie stuff lately.

Keanu Reeves is Fred/Bob Arctor, Robert Downey Jr. is Barris, and Winona Ryder is Donna. Looks like they'll all be in entirely too familiar territory, which may or may not prove to be a good thing.
